Marc writes:
If you are new to running, the Mercury News
10K/5K is a very well known race in the Bay Area celebrating its 25th running
this year. It would be great to have a strong turnout from the
MITcrc. If you are a casual walker or jogger, take the 5K walk.
If you are a serious middle distance runner, here is a chance to set a PR
in the 10K. For the marathoners in the club, call it speed training.
For all of us, it is a good excuse to get together for some exercise, enjoy
each other's company, and support charity in our community.
The MITcrc race coordinator is Marc Terziev (
marcterziev@telocity.com).
Please let Marc know if you plan to run this race. We will pick a
meeting spot for the club before the race. We can consider putting
together a brunch picnic for the club after the race if there is
interest. And, as always, wear your club T shirt to the race.
See you there.

- Sunday, October 27, 2002: Silicon Valley
Marathon
The Silicon Valley Marathon provides a great incentive to get fit. Last
year we fielded more participants than any other running club, placed fourth
in club competition, and won the best Aid Station award. We enjoyed reserved
tables at the carbo-loading party and hosted a booth at the expo. As last
year, many people are planning to walk/run a major event for the first time.
At least two people will be doing their first marathons. Please plan to join
us as a walker, runner, and/or volunteer in our biggest event of the year.

The Silicon Valley Marathon/Half Marathon/Relays/10k/Kids Races is
scheduled for Sunday, October 27. The new course still starts and finishes
in downtown San Jose but now offers nearly 16 miles on the Los Gatos Creek
Trail passing by lakes and parks with views of the Santa Cruz Mountains
along with a dramatic finish in Discovery Meadows. Plus, it now offers a
2-person marathon relay on the same picturesque course and a flat, fast, fun
10k to Willow Glen and back.

The entire run is within an umbrella of Redwood trees and 95.2% on single
track. The five mile course climbs about 1,250 feet out before returning.
The half marathon visits more of the park's north westerly sections before
meeting Skyline at 1,800 feet where the trail levels off for 1.5 miles
before descending yet more of the park's trails.

Angel Island, Tiburon

MITcrc Chair: Lisa lisa@batna.com
The day starts with a quick 10 minute ferry from Tiburon to the island.
While this is certainly not a flat course, the only real climb is in the
first mile, about 500 feet. The seven mile loop covers the island once with
the 1/2 marathoners doing the loop twice. With the recent upgrades to the
island's trail system you can now guarantee unobstructed 360 degree
picture-postcard views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco skyline,
Marin, and Mt. Tamalpais.
Sunday, November 10, 2002: Golden Gate Bridge Presidio Run
10 Miles !!
Starts at: The presidio, San-Francisco, 7:30 AM
Description:
This is the race that has been rated 'One of the 10 Most Scenic Races in
the US'! Participants will start near Pershing Square in the Presidio.
From there, the course will take runners to Mason Street and Crissy Field.
After running the length of Crissy Field, the course will then turn back
into the Presidio, and pass by the National Cemetery and the Pet Cemetery
before heading back to Mason Street and the road to historic Fort Point.
After a turnaround at the Fort, runners will then experience the thrills of
a San Francisco hill and the climb to the Golden Gate Bridge. Participants
will have the rare treat of running on both sides of the Bridge as they head
towards Marin on the east side, then head back to San Francisco on the west
side of the Bridge. After a trip underneath the Bridge, runners follow the
course downhill to view the sites alongside scenic Golden Gate Promenade.
Views will feature Alcatraz, Crissy Field and the Tidal Marsh, the San
Francisco Bay, and the Palace of Fine Arts. Participants will then head back
into the Presidio for a finish on the Parade Grounds. Questions? Call 510.979.9700

Race start/finish is at the Stinson Beach Park. It's a very hilly loop trail
run on single-track, dirt hiking trails in Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Muir
Woods, & GGNRA with panoramic vistas, babbling brooks, waterfalls,
redwood, oak & fern forests. The course is designed to maximize the
stunning scenery and diversity of terrain in Marin. It will also provide a
spectacular challenge with its hilly route. There is an elevation gain of
1800' and loss of 1800' in the 7 mile run, a gain and loss of 3300' in the
25K, and a whopping gain and loss of 4200' in the marathon. Aid stations
with water, food and sport drink are at miles 3, 11, 16, 19 and the finish.
It is strongly recommended you carry water. Early registration closes
Thursday, October 31.
We have reservations at the Ocean Court Motel, which is right at the
start line. The serpentine ascent to the 2,572 ft east peak of Mt. Tamalpais

stretch of sandy shoreline.

Death Valley, California

Hikers: Peter plholland@aol.com
Out and back FLAT (less than 500 feet of climbing and descending) paved run
on Hwy 190 through the heart of Death Valley National Park from Furnace
Creek. Entire course is below sea level with fantastic vistas of the
surrounding mountain ranges (the Panamints, the Funerals, the Cottonwoods,
the Black, the Grapevines) and the desert floor. Probably one of the most
interesting courses around in a gorgeous setting. The desert is beautiful
this time of year with mild temperatures: lows 30-40 degrees and highs in
the low 70's. Aid stations with water, sport drink, energy bars, and other
goodies approximately every three miles. An extra water bottle is
recommended as it is easy to dehydrate in the desert.
Death Valley National Monument has the highest temperatures and lowest
elevations in the Western Hemisphere. The highest recorded temperature of
134 F has been exceeded only in the Libyan Sahara Desert. Elevations in the
park range from 11,049 ft to -282 ft. Stands of limber pine and bristlecone
pine grow in the heights; lower elevations support various kinds of sparse,
bushy vegetation. About three million years ago the basin floor sank leaving
mountains that are now flanked by alluvial fans; west side fans are larger
as the basin continues to tilt east. Beautiful views are available from
Zabriskie Point and Dante's View and along Titus Canyon Road. Other scenic
vistas include Mosaic Canyon, Ubehebe Crater, Badwater, Artist's Drive, and
Golden Canyon. Other noteworthy spots include Death Valley Museum, Harmony
Borax Works, and Scotty's Castle.
We have reservations at the Furnace Creek Resort, which is right at the
start line. The Furnace Creek Inn is a vaguely Moorish stone structure in a
palm grove that produces date palms. The resort includes the world's lowest
golf course. A borax mine locomotive and 20-mule team wagons are shaded by
tamarisk trees outside the Borax Museum. Camping is available. Driving from
the Bay Area is about eight hours and from Las Vegas International Airport
about two hours.
